Chinese Cemetery

Introduction The Chinese Cemetery was founded in 1850 by Chinese community leaders Lim Ong and Tan Quien Sien to provide a resting place for Chinese who were unable to return to their native land. Spanning 54 hectares and enclosed by 10-meter-high walls, many of its tombs are constructed from marble and are remarkably luxurious. Its outward appearance resembles an upscale residential neighborhood, but it is actually a Chinese graveyard. Following local Chinese customs, the burial plots are spacious, with each family constructing tomb structures resembling houses made of reinforced concrete. Some even have everyday amenities such as air conditioners and refrigerators installed—an astonishing sight that speaks to the wealth of the local Chinese community. Note: Please maintain a respectful demeanor during your visit. Transportation The Chinese Cemetery is about 5 kilometers from downtown Manila and can be reached by taxi. Alternatively, you can take the LRT and get off at the Jose Abad Santos station, then walk to the cemetery’s south gate. You may also take the Monumento jeepney to Aurora Blvd and head east to reach the south entrance. Admission/Opening Hours Admission is free. Opening hours: 7:30 AM – 7:00 PM.
