Tomb of King Wang Geon, Founder of Goryeo

Attraction Introduction The Tomb of King Wang Geon is located at the foot of Songak Mountain, about 6 kilometers south of Kaesong City. The tomb is that of King Wang Geon, the founding monarch of Goryeo — Korea’s first unified state, which lasted 475 years from 918 to 1392. It is one of the valuable historical relics that reflect the long history and cultural traditions of the Korean people. It was renovated on January 31 in the 83rd year of the Juche era (1994), commemorating the 1117th anniversary of King Wang Geon’s birth. The tomb complex covers an area of more than 55,000 square meters, featuring the grand and solemn royal tomb built on three tiers, a portrait, stone statues of scholars and warriors symbolizing wisdom and bravery during the period of unifying the Three Kingdoms, numerous artworks depicting the struggles and achievements of the Goryeo people, as well as a gate tower and a memorial hall. In front of the gate tower stands a stele inscribed with the Chinese characters “Renovation of the Tomb of King Wang Geon, Founder of Goryeo” written by the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung. Visitors can view the interior of the tomb and its murals, and a spacious park has been laid out in front of the tomb.
