Attraction Introduction Pohyon Temple is one of the Five Great Temples of Korea. It was built in 1042 and underwent several renovations over the years. The existing structures date back to the period between 1441 and 1765. Originally, the temple complex comprised 24 buildings and pagodas. Today, it includes the Main Buddha Hall, Caoxi Gate, Liberation Gate, Heavenly King Gate, Longevity Pavilion, Guanyin Hall, Mount Ling Hall, Chouzhong Temple, the Preservation Hall of the Tripitaka Koreana, the Scripture Depository, a nine-story square pagoda, a thirteen-story octagonal pagoda, the Pohyon Temple Stele, among others. The Main Buddha Hall exemplifies the outstanding architectural artistry of the Korean people, and legends tell of patriotic monks such as the Great Monk of Seongsan fighting against Japanese pirates here. The Preservation Hall of the Tripitaka Koreana houses the precious national treasure, the Tripitaka Koreana, which showcases the development of Korean printing technology. The thirteen-story octagonal pagoda stands in front of the Main Buddha Hall and was built in the late Goryeo Dynasty. It is 8.58 meters tall with each side measuring 1.2 meters. A total of 104 wind bells hang from the eaves of each octagonal tier, producing a delightful sound when the wind blows that is truly enchanting.
