Birch Memorial Clock Tower

The Birch Memorial Clock Tower is located in the city center of Ipoh, Perak. Built in 1909, it was erected to commemorate Sir Hugh Low, the first British Resident of Perak. Sir Hugh was assassinated in 1875 while on an official visit to Pasir Salak and died in office. This tower was constructed in his honor and named after him.

The Birch Memorial Clock Tower is a British-style square building. The sculptures on the four sides of the tower’s top represent the four core virtues of the British government: loyalty, justice, perseverance, and tolerance. The second level features beautifully carved murals depicting 49 professions from various fields, including scholars, warriors, sculptors, and astrologers, among whom one is believed to be Jesus. On the four sides of the tower are symbols representing the four major religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism, signifying their peaceful coexistence in Malaya during the British colonial period. The tower is also equipped with four clocks, one on each side, which chime on the hour.
