Ipoh in Perak, Malaysia, is a city surrounded by limestone. Towering hills are visible no matter where you go, giving rise to numerous caves. Among them, Sam Poh Tong is one of the well-known Buddhist caves.

Before entering the cave, you’ll see a small garden with verdant grass, upright trees, and oddly shaped rocks. Beneath a small bridge, there’s also a fish pond where the fish swim freely. Sam Poh Tong is a Chinese-style limestone cave and a Buddhist temple built into the hillside. The cave features winding paths inside and enshrines a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. The stone walls are adorned with vivid paintings of immortals, bodhisattvas, and deities. Visiting Sam Poh Tong is one way to experience the local Chinese cultural heritage. In addition to these Buddhist sculptures and murals, there are also Taoist paintings.

Aside from praying to the Buddha, visitors can also admire the naturally formed stalagmites and stalactites in the upper cave, which are quite unique. There is also a turtle pond in the cave, home to countless turtles of all sizes. It’s quite a sight to see them crawling out of the pond and onto the nearby stone paths.
