Kelly Castle

Kelly Castle is situated 12 kilometers south of St Andrews and is an outstanding example of Lowland Scottish mansion architecture. The history of the castle dates back to the 14th century. Its rich and varied past remains unclear, having changed hands multiple times with continual alterations to its scale and interior decor until it reached its current form.

The last owner of Kelly Castle was the sculptor Hew Lorimer, who purchased the castle in 1948. After living there for 22 years, he sold the entire castle along with its 6.5-hectare garden to the National Trust for Scotland in 1970. Upon taking over the property, the Trust undertook comprehensive conservation and restoration work. In 1998, they acquired handicrafts from the Lorimer family to decorate the interior, and subsequently opened the site to the public.

The castle houses a permanent exhibition of Hew Lorimer’s works as well as his former studio. The interiors feature finely crafted plaster ceilings, paneling, and premium furnishings designed by Robert Lorimer, along with murals created by the renowned arts and crafts pioneer Phoebe Anna Traquair. The accompanying garden is a walled garden laid out in 17th-century style, adorned with many late Victorian decorations and planted with roses, fruit trees, and herbs, making it a great spot for outdoor activities.
