Wat Chedi Luang

Introduction Wat Chedi Luang, also translated as Chali Luang Temple, is located at the southern end of Chiang Mai's Old City (Phrapokklao Road). Established in 1411, it is the most famous among the six major temples in Chiang Mai and, along with Wat Phra Singh, holds the highest status in the city. The temple houses a massive square-shaped chedi, initially built in the early 15th century and expanded several times thereafter. It stands 85.4 meters tall and is said to offer a view that reaches up to a thousand li.

In 1545, a major earthquake and strong winds struck Chiang Mai, causing the spire of the chedi to collapse overnight and reveal the golden Buddha statue inside.
