Wat Phra Singh

Wat Phra Singh is located in the western part of Chiang Mai’s Old City and is the largest and most interesting Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai. Originally built in 1345, it has been expanded multiple times to reach its current size. Along with Wat Chedi Luang, it is considered one of the most revered temples in the Old City.

The temple is shaded by ancient trees, with lush pines and cypresses. As you push open the temple gate, the first thing that catches your eye is a parking lot. Beyond the parking lot lies the prayer hall, which features exquisite carvings and is very majestic. To the right of the prayer hall is an altar, built in standard Thai style and exceptionally beautiful. On the left is the scripture depository, whose several pedestals are adorned with exquisitely carved, lifelike patterns. Directly behind the prayer hall is the ordination hall, used for the ordination of young monks and other major temple events. Next to the ordination hall is a stupa, parallel to the prayer hall, and beside the stupa is a delicate small prayer hall. The intricate carvings inside are worth careful observation by visitors. Thailand’s Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) is celebrated annually from April 13 to 15, and Wat Phra Singh is one of the main venues for the festivities.
