House of Seo Sang-don

Seo Sang-don was an entrepreneur, bureaucrat, and independence activist during the late Joseon Dynasty. He achieved success in Daegu by trading paper and textiles, later becoming a government tax inspector who managed tax grain. In 1970, when the government lost national sovereignty due to debts owed to Japan, Seo Sang-don, together with Kim Gwang-je, president of Kwangmunsa, launched a nationwide national debt repayment movement centered on tobacco prohibition to repay the national debt, demonstrating lofty patriotism that earned him the admiration of the entire nation.

The House of Seo Sang-don is the residence where Mr. Seo Sang-don lived during his lifetime. It is located on Seoseong-ro in Jung District, Daegu Metropolitan City, adjacent to the House of Lee Sang-hwa. The house still preserves furniture that Seo Sang-don used during his life, as well as related materials and accounts of his life and achievements, making it the most important site to learn about his life story. Additionally, to commemorate and promote his noble spirit, the city of Daegu has built the National Debt Repayment Park near the house and erected a statue, among other efforts, to help more people learn about his life.
