Nakdong Academy

Nakdong Academy is located at 585-1 Yourok-ri, Gachang-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea. It was initially established as a residential hall financed and built by local Confucian scholars in the 13th year of King Jeongjo's reign (1789), and was completed in the 18th year of King Jeongjo (1794). However, it was demolished in the first year of King Gojong’s reign (1864) due to Heungseon Daewongun’s edict to shut down private academies. In the 22nd year of King Gojong (1885), Confucian scholars from the Yeongnam region and the Kim clan's Munjong jointly rebuilt the academy. In 1971, with the support of state funding, it was relocated to its current site.

The atmosphere within Nakdong Academy is tranquil and serene. The various historic structures that remain on-site are enhanced by the surrounding trees and flowers, exuding an antique charm and a scholarly ambiance. The academy enshrines the memorial tablet of General Kim Chung-sam, and memorial rites are held in his honor every spring and autumn to commemorate his distinguished achievements. Moreover, since the late years of King Yeongjo’s reign, Confucian scholars from the three provinces frequently gathered here to discuss scholarship, giving the place a strong academic atmosphere.
