Daegu

Daegu (대구), the capital of North Gyeongsang Province in southeastern South Korea, is located in a mountain basin along the Geumho River, a tributary of the Nakdong River. Formerly known as Dalseong, it has a humid climate and a well-developed light industry, primarily focused on cotton spinning, wool spinning, silk production, and synthetic fiber manufacturing. Other key industries include rubber, ceramics, agricultural product processing, agricultural machinery, and transportation equipment. The surrounding area is rich in the production of grains, vegetables, cotton, and silk. The eastern suburbs are particularly known for their apples and vegetables. Greater Daegu is situated in the central part of the Daegu Basin on the eastern side of the Nakdong River’s midstream, surrounded by mountains such as Palgongsan, Hwanseongsan, Yongyeonsan, Chilseongsan, Saseongsan, Biseulsan, Choijeongsan, and Waryongsan. The Geumho River flows through the city before joining the Nakdong River. The urban area covers 445 square kilometers and is administratively divided into seven districts: Jung, Dong, Seo, Nam, Buk, Suseong, and Dalseo. Popular tourist attractions in Daegu include Palgongsan Natural Park, which features a cable car stretching 2.4 kilometers, the ancient Tonghwa Temple dating back to the Silla Dynasty, Dalseong Park built on the site of an ancient tribal fortress, as well as the bronze statue of Choi Je-u, the founder of the Donghak movement, and the poetry monument dedicated to Lee Sang-hwa.
