Pungnam Gate

Designated as National Treasure No. 308, Pungnam Gate was built during the mid-Joseon Dynasty. It served as the southern gate of the ancient Jeonju Fortress and is the only remaining structure among the four gates—east, west, south, and north—of the Jeonju fortress town.

Pungnam Gate was damaged during the Imjin War (a conflict caused by foreign invasion between 1592 and 1598). The current structure was rebuilt in 1978. It is a two-story gatehouse with a rainbow gate at its center. The gate is surrounded by fortress walls, giving it a majestic appearance.

Directions: 1. From Jeonju Express Bus Terminal or Jeonju Intercity Bus Terminal: The pick-up point for the Jeonju Express Bus Terminal is in front of Korea National Open University, and for the Jeonju Intercity Bus Terminal, it is at Gimam Rotary. Take a bus bound for Namseong Market and get off at Jeonju Dangdong Cathedral (takes about 20–30 minutes). 2. From Jeonju Station: Take a bus bound for Namseong Market and get off at Jeonju Dangdong Cathedral (takes about 30–35 minutes). 3. It takes about 15 minutes by taxi from either Jeonju Station or the bus terminal.
