Jeonju History Museum

The Jeonju History Museum, which opened in 2002, consists of permanent and special exhibition halls, vividly and engagingly presenting Korea’s modern history to visitors. The Permanent Exhibition Hall 1 displays the outbreak and progression of the Donghak Peasant Movement (a 1894 uprising by farmers seeking equality); Permanent Exhibition Hall 2 recreates Korea’s modern history, including the Righteous Army Movement (a spontaneous resistance by Korean citizens against Japanese invasion) and the Independence Movement (launched to seek national independence after Japan’s occupation of Korea), through various relics and materials. The Special Exhibition Hall hosts themed special exhibitions.

Directions: ■ From Jeonju Station, take bus 118 (departing from Jeonju Station, first bus to Statistics Office direction at 06:10, 09:17, 12:57), 45, 511, 515, 551 (local), 551 (seated), 552, or 60 headed toward “Statistics Office,” “Sam-san-ri,” or “Sammun,” and get off at the museum (about 1 hour). ■ From the intercity bus terminal (walk 5–10 minutes from the five-way intersection toward Tonggye-ro, located at the old fountain intersection), take bus 118 (departing from Jeonju Station, first bus to Statistics Office direction at 06:10, 09:17, 12:57), 354, 384, 45, 554, 57, 61, 644, 684, 692, or 694 headed toward “Statistics Office,” “Geum-gu,” or “Sam-san-ri,” and get off at the museum (about 45 minutes). ■ By taxi, it takes about 30 minutes from the intercity bus terminal or 40 minutes from the train station heading toward Statistics Office or Geum-gu. ■ Get off at the “Gungnip Jeonju Bangmulgwan” (National Jeonju Museum) stop, walk about 5 minutes along the road between the gas stations, and you’ll arrive at the National Jeonju Museum’s opposite side.
