Kitakyushu City

Kitakyushu City is situated at the northernmost point of Kyushu Island in Japan, across the Kanmon Strait from Honshu. Named "Kitakyushu" because it lies at the northern edge of Kyushu, it is also the first designated ordinance city located outside Japan’s three major metropolitan regions. The area around Kitakyushu has developed into two economic zones: the Kitakyushu Urban Area and the Kitakyushu Industrial Zone, making it one of the most prominent cities in the Kyushu region.

Kitakyushu still preserves many architectural complexes that reflect its ancient charm, making it a representative sightseeing destination in northern Kyushu. Major attractions include the national cultural heritage site Mojiko Station, the Old Osaka Shosen Building known as the "Goddess of Port Beauty," and the former Mojiko Mitsui Club where Einstein and his wife once stayed—buildings full of exotic flair. In addition, there are popular tourist facilities such as the Kanmon Straits-themed Canal Ship Theater and the Kyushu Railway Museum, which delights railway enthusiasts. The Higashida area of Kitakyushu is currently drawing attention for its theme park and multiple exhibition halls, including the well-known Space World theme park, the Life Science Museum, and the Environment Museum.

To experience Kitakyushu’s food culture, head to Dangu-cho Market in Kokura Central. The area is packed with shops offering the freshest local seafood and mountain delicacies, brimming with vitality. As such, it serves as both an everyday kitchen for locals and a charming, local-flavored sightseeing spot that enjoys great popularity.
