Kurume City

Kurume City is a major city in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, and one of the first cities to be officially established in the country. It has the third-largest population in Fukuoka Prefecture, following Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City, both of which have been designated as ordinance-designated cities, and ranks eighth in the entire Kyushu region. Bridgestone was founded here in 1931, and today there are many factories producing rubber products in the area. In recent years, the automotive industry has also established plants here.

Kurume City is home to numerous universities, including the Kurume National College of Technology, St. Mary’s College, Kurume University, and Kurume Institute of Technology. The city’s most famous historical site is the Koura Taisha Shrine, formerly known as the Koura Tamatsukuri no Mikoto Shrine or Koura Tamatsukuri Palace. It is classified as a Shikinaisha (notably a Myojin Taisha), the Ichinomiya of Chikugo Province, and was formerly ranked as a Kokuhō Taisha. Historically favored by the Imperial family, it remains a significant spiritual site. Other notable attractions include Kurume Castle, Arima Memorial Hall, Suiten-gu Shrine, Daisen-ji Tamatsukuri Shrine, Aoki Shigeru’s Former Residence, Kurume City Bird Center, Hyakunen Park, Komorino Bridge, Nisen-nen Bridge, and Ba Rin Ji Temple.
