Dazaifu City

Dazaifu City is a city located in central Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, approximately 16 kilometers southeast of Fukuoka City and part of the Fukuoka metropolitan area. The city center is divided into two parts by the Mikasa River, with Mount Hōman to the east, Mount Amagi (in Chikushino City) to the southwest, and Mount Tennoji to the north. The western and southern parts of the city consist mainly of residential areas.

Dazaifu City is a popular tourist destination, home to the ancient Dazaifu government office ruins and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, attracting a large number of visitors every year. Both Dazaifu Tenmangu and Kitano Tenmangu are considered the head shrines of all Tenmangu shrines across Japan and the center of Tenjin worship, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship. With many students visiting to pray for academic success, it is a sacred site for those seeking good grades. Other must-visit sites include Koma Shrine, Iwaya Castle, Mount Hōman, Koumyou-ji Temple, Oouchi Shrine, the Dazaifu Ruins, Mizu-no-Ichi Ruins, Ohno Castle Ruins, the Kyushu National Museum, the Kyushu Museum of History, Kyushu Onsen Village, and Dazaifu Amusement Park.
