Risshaku-ji Temple

The official name of Risshaku-ji Temple is Hōju-san Risshaku-ji, also known as Yamadera. It is a Tendai sect temple located on a steep mountain in the northeastern part of Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 860 AD by the monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin, it is one of the most famous temples of the Tendai sect and a representative spiritual site in Japan’s northeastern region, boasting a large following and bustling with worshippers all year round.

The temple is grand in architecture and rich in history, making it beloved by both the general public and many cultural figures. In 1689 (the second year of the Genroku era), the famed Japanese haiku poet Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694) visited Yamadera and left behind the well-known verse, “Silence — / penetrating the stones — / cicada’s cry.” Since then, this line has been widely circulated. It is said that as visitors ascend the 1,015 stone steps from the mountain entrance to the temple, their worries gradually fade away. Upon reaching the Oku-no-in Hall at the top of the staircase, they can enjoy the temple’s unique and breathtaking views, which help to dispel fatigue. In recent years, an increasing number of foreign tourists have visited Risshaku-ji, prompting the temple to launch volunteer-led foreign language tour guide training programs (currently offered in Chinese and Korean), allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the temple.
