Hanamaki is a city located in the central-western part of Iwate Prefecture in Japan’s northeastern Tohoku region. It is the hometown of the renowned Japanese poet, fairy tale writer, agricultural advisor, and educator Kenji Miyazawa (1896–1933). The Hanamaki Onsen area is a large-scale hot spring resort developed locally, featuring a total of 14 hot springs including Hanamaki Onsen, Dai Onsen, Kinya Onsen, Shitohira Onsen, Osawa Onsen, and Watariguchi Onsen. With its diverse range and rich variety, it is one of the largest hot spring resort destinations in Iwate Prefecture.

The Hanamaki Onsen area offers comfortable living facilities and a pleasant travel environment. The entire hot spring street is lined with roses, cherry blossoms, pine trees, and other plants, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Especially notable are the roses from around the world that bloom seasonally, displaying vibrant clusters of blossoms in dazzling colors that captivate visitors and add a unique charm to the onsen town. The hot spring water in Hanamaki Onsen is primarily alkaline bicarbonate, which is known to have therapeutic effects for neuralgia and rheumatism. Coupled with the area’s well-connected transportation network, it remains a highly popular destination.
