Yahiro Onsen is located in Kitakami City, in the southwestern part of Iwate Prefecture in the northeastern region of Japan. Nestled within the rugged mountainside valley of Mount Yakeishi, it is known for being a secluded hot spring hidden deep in the mountains. However, due to its remote mountain location, it closes during winter when heavy snowfall blocks access, making it a seasonally limited hot spring. There are two theories about the origin of the name “Yahiro Onsen”: one is that because the hot spring is situated in a steep mountainside area, in the Ainu language, “Yahiro” means “place of cliffs,” hence the name; the other theory comes from observers who noticed that in midsummer, sunlight reflecting on the spring water makes it shimmer as if coated with oil—thus giving it the name Yahiro.

Yahiro Onsen consists of open-air hot springs surrounded by nature, as well as seven different bathing areas: the main large bath, waterfall bath, hernia bath, true bath, beauty eye bath, white monkey bath, and little tengu bath. Most of these are chloride springs composed of sodium and calcium, along with sulfate springs, which are said to have therapeutic effects on cuts, burns, chronic skin conditions, weak constitutions in children, chronic gynecological diseases, and arteriosclerosis. Visitors can leisurely enjoy the comfort of the hot springs while taking in the beautiful surroundings—truly a delightful experience.
