Motsu-ji

Motsu-ji is a Tendai sect Buddhist temple located in Hiraizumi, Nishinasuno District, Iwate Prefecture, in northeastern Japan. It was founded in 850 by the eminent monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin, and its principal object of worship is Yakushi Nyorai (the Buddha of Healing), flanked by the bodhisattvas Nikkō and Gakkō. The temple holds the prestigious dual status of both a National Special Historic Site and a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty in Japan. Especially admired by travelers worldwide is the opulent beauty of its Heian-period Pure Land Garden, making it one of Hiraizumi’s most renowned cultural tourism destinations.

In the early 12th century, thanks to substantial patronage from the Fujiwara clan, Motsu-ji once boasted a grand complex comprising 40 halls and pagodas along with 500 monks’ quarters, surpassing even Chūson-ji Temple (the Tendai sect’s northeastern headquarters in Hiraizumi). However, following the decline of the Fujiwara clan’s power and several devastating fires, the temple shrank in scale. Its gardens preserve the refined architectural and landscaping aesthetics of the Heian period, embodying the Pure Land culture that harmonizes spiritual serenity with nature — a priceless world heritage.
