Gyokusendo Cave

Introduction

Gyokusendo Cave is the largest limestone karst cave on Okinawa Island. It was discovered in 1967 (Showa 42) by an academic exploration team from Ehime University. It is estimated to be 300,000 years old, with its main and branch caves stretching a combined length of 5 kilometers, making it the second largest in Japan after Anko Cave in Iwate Prefecture. However, it boasts over 900,000 stalactites in an extremely diverse array of shapes, earning it the title of the best in the Orient.

Currently, only 800 meters of the cave are open to tourists. The cave maintains a cool temperature of around 21 to 24 degrees Celsius, allowing visitors to comfortably explore this natural wonder.

Transportation Take the Ryukyu Bus Maeshiro Line from Naha Bus Terminal and get off at Gyokusendo Cave in about 50 minutes.
