Izu Peninsula

Introduction

The Izu Peninsula is located in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture, jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, covering an area of 1,430 square kilometers. The Fuji Volcanic Zone runs north to south across the peninsula, resulting in numerous hot springs. It is home to Japan’s largest hot spring city, Atami, as well as the Shuzenji Onsen with over 1,200 years of history, and hot springs at Izu-yama, -, and Nagaoka.

Dōjima, one of the Eight Views of Izu, is located in a bay on the western coast of the peninsula. Here, many grayish-white tuff rock islets are scattered like pearls on the sea. In addition, the island is dotted with temples. At the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, Shiretoko-zaki features a 100-meter-high sea cliff with an observation deck offering scenic views. The Izu Seven Islands, located opposite the Izu Peninsula, are also worth visiting.
