Iriomote Island is located about 18 kilometers west of Ishigaki Island, covering an area of 289 square kilometers. It is the largest island in Japan’s Yaeyama Islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago and the second largest in Okinawa Prefecture after Okinawa Island itself.

Before World War II, Iriomote Island was plagued by malaria and remained uninhabited, mainly used for rice cultivation. During the war, some refugees fled to the island to escape the conflict and contracted malaria. It wasn’t until after the war, during the U.S. administration of the Ryukyu Islands, that malaria was eradicated, allowing for more significant development and a resurgence of vitality on the island. Iriomote has a tropical rainforest climate, with an average annual temperature of 23.4°C and annual rainfall of 2,500 mm. About 90% of the island is covered by dense jungle and mangrove swamps, offering fresh air and an outstanding natural environment that serves as an ideal habitat for numerous wildlife species. Among them, the Iriomote cat, a nocturnal feline endemic to the island, is estimated to have only around 100 individuals left and is critically endangered.
