Kerama Islands

The Kerama Islands are located in Tokashiki Village and Zamami Village of Okinawa Prefecture, approximately 40 kilometers west of Naha City. They are a sub-group of the Okinawa Islands within the Ryukyu Archipelago, comprising over 20 islands of varying sizes. Among the many islands in the Kerama group, the main ones are Tokashiki Island, Zamami Island, and Aka Island.

The Kerama Islands are famed for their exceptionally clear emerald-green waters, with visibility reaching 50–60 meters. They are also one of the world’s top diving and whale-watching destinations. The clarity of the water here is among the best in the world, featuring vibrant coral reefs and a diverse array of fish, earning them the nickname "Kerama Blue." From January to March each year, humpback whales can be spotted swimming in the waters near the islands. These whales migrate in pods from distant Alaska to these warmer seas to give birth, and their massive presence leaves visitors in awe. Tourists can stroll along the long beaches covered with white sand and crushed coral, go diving or fishing in the sea, or simply relax and nap under the shade of trees.

In addition, the pristine forests of Aka Island and Kuroshima are home to the Kerama deer, designated as a natural monument. If you’re looking for a moment of peace in an untouched natural setting, this is the perfect destination.
