Shengfo Temple is located in the Shengfo Forest Mountain, 14 kilometers south of the county town. It was first built during the Taihe era of Emperor Zhangzong of the Jin Dynasty, underwent major renovations in the 42nd year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, and was restored multiple times during the Qing Dynasty. The temple complex once housed over 120 halls and chambers, making it the largest Buddhist temple in Guangling with recorded history. However, due to historical reasons, it was destroyed in 1967. Currently, the site preserves the temple foundation, a forest of steles, and a pagoda forest, along with a five-room reconstructed Hall of the Medicine Buddha by local devotees. The pagoda forest consists of burial stupas for Buddhist monks, dating back to the Qing Dynasty. Originally there were 14 stupas, but 8 remain today. Each stupa stands 1.55 meters tall with a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 meters, all built on brick Sumeru pedestals. The area also features over 3,500 acres of pristine secondary forest, lush and dense, blocking out the sky, accompanied by rustling pines, birdsong, floral fragrances, and clean air, earning it the nickname “natural oxygen bar.” Coupled with the mysterious legend of the “Treasure Basin,” it adds endless charm to the site.
