Tongatapu Island

The southernmost Tongatapu Island is the most bustling and largest island in Tonga, covering about one-third of the country's land area. Tongatapu (Tongatapu) is the main island of the Kingdom of Tonga, with the capital Nuku'alofa located on this island. With a total area of 259 square kilometers, Tongatapu is the economic and transportation hub of Tonga. The island features vast coconut and banana plantations, while the nearby Eua Island is covered with dense tropical rainforest. Tongatapu is a flat coral island with an elevation of only 10 meters. Over the centuries, relentless waves have eroded its thousands of meters of coral coastline into bizarre holes that connect all the way to the sky—these are the world-famous “Blowholes.” When the tide rises, seawater surges through these holes, shooting dozens of meters into the air before crashing back down to the ground, creating a dazzling and spectacular sight in the sunlight.
