Refreshing and affordable cold noodles with rich sauce — a great summer choice

This Zhangjia Cold Noodles, located near Yuanli’s wet market, has been doing pretty well in business. I think it’s only been around for a year or two. Although Yuanli used to have a Sichuan-style cold noodles that many missed, it’s no longer in operation, which meant that when people craved cold noodles, they could only turn to convenience stores. Since Zhangjia Cold Noodles opened, I’ve finally had a place to satisfy my craving on hot summer days. I personally think the noodles are quite chewy, and the sauce is rich and flavorful — it’s a solid cold noodle dish overall.


Next to Zhangjia Cold Noodles is a rice ball shop, which also has quite a following in Yuanli. I’ve written about ‘Miaoli Cuisine’: Yuanli’s 30-Year-Old Shop with Old-School Flavors — Tsaiyuan Rice Balls and Gua Bao.


They also serve hot noodles in winter.


They only sell noodles and soups.


There are two or three staff members helping out in the shop. Business is decent, with locals coming in steadily.

I’m not a fan of miso-based soups, but my friend likes them, so we ordered some. The soup is okay, and the meatballs are delicious.


Cold Noodles — Small NT$30 / Large NT$35
These cold noodles have a rich sesame sauce aroma. As you stir them, the fragrance just keeps coming out. There’s a sauce at the bottom made with soy sauce, garlic, vinegar, and more, which you mix with the sesame sauce. The aroma is so enticing it really gets your appetite going.

Their noodles are really springy and have the chewy yet tender texture I like. The sesame sauce is rich and refreshing, and overall it performs solidly. Plus, the price is very reasonable — it’s a budget-friendly snack.
