ChristChurch Cathedral

ChristChurch Cathedral, also known as Christ Church Cathedral, and alternatively translated as Christcity Cathedral or Christchurch Cathedral, is the Anglican cathedral of the city of Christchurch, surrounded by Cathedral Square. ChristChurch Cathedral serves as the cathedral for the Bishop of ChristChurch, of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.

The construction of ChristChurch Cathedral began in 1864. However, at that time, Christchurch was still a small, newly developing city with limited funds and labor. Between 1865 and 1873, the project was temporarily suspended, and it was even once referred to as “the most disastrously failed building project on record.” In 1873, the renowned New Zealand architect Benjamin Mountfort took over the project and finally completed the main structure of the cathedral in November 1881. However, the transepts, chancel, and sanctuary were not finished until 1904, making it one of the most beautiful landmarks in Christchurch.

The overall architectural style of ChristChurch Cathedral is Gothic Revival, noble and elegant, making it an important and iconic building in Christchurch. However, as New Zealand is a country prone to earthquakes, like many other buildings in Christchurch, the cathedral has suffered damage from multiple earthquakes since its completion. During the 2011 earthquake, the spire collapsed, half of the tower remained standing, and the structural integrity of the building was severely compromised.
