Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is a nature reserve located in Christchurch, Canterbury, with a 35-year history dedicated to the conservation of New Zealand’s endangered animals and birds. It serves as one of the country's most important kiwi breeding programs.

The reserve is home to over 500 animals and birds from more than 50 species, divided into three sections: Wild New Zealand, Heritage New Zealand, and Native New Zealand. Wild New Zealand houses exotic wildlife, Heritage New Zealand features domestic livestock, farm animals, and birds, while Native New Zealand is home to local species and introduced predators. The kiwi, an iconic New Zealand animal, is so representative that visiting the country without seeing one is almost like not having been there at all. One of the main reasons the reserve is so popular is its kiwi population — many kiwi chicks have been successfully bred here. A special kiwi encounter area allows visitors to observe these national birds up close.

During the day, the reserve is bustling with visitors, and the excitement continues into the evening, where you can enjoy Māori cultural performances as well as join the New Zealand nocturnal wildlife tour. The reserve is open from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM daily, with the last entry at 6:00 PM. It is open year-round except for Christmas Day.
