Christchurch Botanic Gardens

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are located in the city center of Christchurch. Established in 1863, the gardens cover an area of 21 hectares. The first plant planted here was an English oak, and today the gardens are home to a diverse range of native and introduced plants.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are among the best in New Zealand and are divided into themed gardens based on plant types and uses, including an herb garden, rose garden, fernery, water garden, rock garden, and heather garden. The herb garden features plants mainly used for cooking and medicinal purposes; the rose garden boasts over 250 varieties of roses in different colors; the rock garden showcases plants that bloom year-round; and the water garden is home to water lilies and irises. Each themed garden has its own unique charm, attracting visitors from all over.

During spring when flowers are in full bloom, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens also become a great spot for birdwatching. Many wood pigeons and cormorants gather here, and of course, butterflies and bees are frequent, uninvited guests that add vibrancy and dynamic beauty to the gardens.
