Its collection now includes 2.1 million items, covering a wide range of topics that reflect the life of the Māori, the earliest settlers of the Canterbury region, European immigrant art, decorative and fashion arts of European and Asian communities, Antarctic exploration, as well as New Zealand’s birds, mammals, insects, rocks, minerals, and fossils. Visitors can explore an array of fascinating exhibits, including life-sized models of traditional Māori life, Māori jewelry, exquisite ornaments and totem carvings, Māori tools (such as fish hooks, water scoops, hunting equipment), modern sculptures, ceramics, bird specimens, dinosaur fossils, and much more.
