Torpedo Bay Navy Museum

Located at a former mining station in Devonport, Auckland, the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum is the official museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy. Opened in 2010, it tells the history and stories of the Royal New Zealand Navy from 1845 to the present.

The museum’s collection is truly one-of-a-kind, offering insight into the history of the Royal New Zealand Navy through a diverse array of items, including both artworks and significant historical relics. The art collection related to the Royal Navy features paintings, paper crafts, and other works connected to naval life, ships, and events. In addition, there are sculptures, handicrafts, embroidery, poetry, and sheet music. Reflecting the Navy’s hierarchical structure, the museum also houses uniforms categorized by rank, as well as buttons, hats, bedding, and more. The technical equipment and specialized gear on display are fascinating, covering navigation instruments, hydrographic tools, diving apparatus, and medical devices—such as telescopes, sextants, diving suits, and chronometers. Other highlights include medals, decorations, and honors awarded to Navy personnel in recognition of their service, alongside an extensive collection of ship models, maps, weapons, photographs, field cooking equipment, and tableware.

The Torpedo Bay Navy Museum is open from 10:00 to 17:00 every day except Good Friday, Christmas Day, and the first working day after Christmas.
