Introduction The Round House was built in 1830 and is the first prison of the early Swan River colonial settlement, as well as the oldest public building in Western Australia. It was designed by Henry Reveley. This historic polygonal structure with twelve sides was originally used as a prison, but—interestingly—there were very few prisoners, only eight. At the seaward corner at the back of the Round House was once a harbour signal station, where at 1:00 PM every day, a black ball would drop from a high pole to signal the time to nearby ships. This performance is still offered to visitors today. Thanks to its elevated position and location next to the Indian Ocean, the Round House offers sweeping views of the city, the harbour, and the Indian Ocean, making it one of the best vantage points in the area.
