Introduction

The Hong Kong Film Archive is located at 50 Lei King Road, Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong Island. The four-storey building has a total floor area of 7,200 square metres. The structure is divided into two sections, with half of each floor allocated as storage space for collections. The other half houses exhibition halls, a cinema, and a reference resource centre.

The Archive promotes the art of Hong Kong cinema to the public, and provides extensive resources for filmmakers and researchers. It currently houses a collection of over 5,600 film titles, the earliest being a scenic documentary short filmed in Hong Kong by the American Edison Company in 1898. The Archive also collects related materials, including: still photographs, scripts, movie posters, original film soundtracks, film bulletins and contract documents, awards, props, and more.

Historical Background:

In 1996, the Hong Kong Film Archive joined the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), exchanging experience with archives worldwide on film preservation and restoration. Though the Archive officially opened in January 2001, its groundwork began in 1993 when the then Urban Council started planning its establishment, collecting and preserving Hong Kong films and related materials such as posters and magazines.
