Introduction

Statue Square is an open area connecting HSBC and Chater Road near the Cenotaph. It features numerous fountains and seating areas. Every Sunday, many Filipino domestic helpers gather here—many of whom come to Hong Kong for work—and the HSBC building serves as another popular gathering spot. The sculptures in the square were destroyed by the Japanese army during World War II, and today only the statue of Sir Thomas Jackson has been returned to its original location; he was once the manager of HSBC. The domed colonial-style building in the center of the square was originally the Supreme Court and now houses the Legislative Council headquarters.
