Western Market

Introduction

Western Market is located at 323 Des Voeux Road Central, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. It was formerly the North Block of the old Sheung Wan Market. Built in 1906, the building features Edwardian architectural style, constructed with red bricks and a granite base. Its ground floor entrance has large rounded arches, giving it historical significance. In the 1980s, the market was relocated due to the construction of the Island Line of the MTR, and in 1991, the Land Development Corporation comprehensively renovated the building and transformed it into a center for traditional trades and crafts that reflect Hong Kong’s cultural characteristics.

Some of the shops inside were originally long-established businesses from the surrounding area, including antique and specialty handicraft stores. The first floor houses many unique small shops such as toy specialty stores, a Coca-Cola flagship store, Ah Chong Gallery, and a tailor shop that sells all kinds of sewing-related items. Different types of flea markets are also held here from time to time. The second floor features fabric specialty shops that were relocated here from the now-demolished Flower Market Street (the current site of the Central Plaza). Originally, Western Market had only two floors, but after renovation, two more floors were added, making it a four-storey building. A nostalgic song and dance restaurant was opened on the top floor.
