A visit to The University of Hong Kong mainly involves seeing three historic buildings: the Main Building, the K.K. Leung Building, and the Tang Chi Ngong Building.   Introduction

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the oldest university in Hong Kong, with the goal of cultivating leaders. HKU originated as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, established in 1887, where Dr. Sun Yat-sen once studied medicine. In 1911, HKU was officially founded, initially comprising three faculties: Medicine, Engineering, and Arts. Its first commencement ceremony was held in December 1916, during which degrees were awarded to 23 graduates and 5 honorary graduates.

Today, HKU has 10 faculties: Architecture, Arts, Business and Economics, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Sciences. It offers 47 undergraduate programs and over 100 postgraduate programs. The university has gradually shifted from focusing solely on teaching to emphasizing both teaching and research, increasing academic exchanges with universities and research institutions worldwide. Notably, it has achieved significant results in medical research (such as SARS virus studies), and several laboratories have been designated as “State Key Laboratories of the People’s Republic of China.” The Tang Chi Ngong Building is an historic structure at The University of Hong Kong, located on the main campus on Pok Fu Lam Road in Hong Kong Island, near Pok Fu Lam Road. It was donated in 1929 by Sir Tang Shiu Kin’s father, Tang Chi Ngong, to serve as the University’s Chinese Department. This three-story flat-roofed building features simple exterior plasterwork and modest decorative patterns. The second floor has five bay windows on the exterior. The building was inaugurated on September 28, 1931, by then-Governor of Hong Kong, Sir William Peel. It now houses the University’s Asia Research Centre. The K.K. Leung Building is another historic structure of The University of Hong Kong, situated on the main campus on Pok Fu Lam Road, opposite the exit of the Main Building. It was completed and opened in 1919. Since 1985, its exterior has been a declared monument of Hong Kong. It is currently used for administrative purposes.

Transportation

1. Take bus 7 from the Central Pier Bus Terminus and get off at the West Gate of The University of Hong Kong on Pok Fu Lam Road.

2. Take bus 23, 40, or 40M from the bus stop outside Pacific Place on Queen’s Road Central and get off at the West Gate of The University of Hong Kong on Pok Fu Lam Road.
