Staircase Street

Staircase Street is located in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. As the name suggests, it is a street dominated by stairs. With the exception of a small section south of Hollywood Road, next to the Man Mo Temple, which allows vehicles to enter Square Street, the rest of the street consists entirely of stone steps. Built between 1841 and 1850 during the early days of Hong Kong's establishment as a colony, it has a long history and has now been listed as a Grade I historic building by the Antiquities and Monuments Office of Hong Kong.

Starting from Queen’s Road Central, Staircase Street ascends along the hillside, passing through Upper Lascar Row, Bowring Lane, Hollywood Road, Square Street, Belcher’s Street, and Eastern Hospital Road, before ending at Caine Road. It is 350 meters long in total. Many films and TV dramas have been filmed here, making it quite popular with tourists. Originally paved with granite, after over a hundred years, most of the street has now been covered with concrete, and modern iron railings have also been installed. However, many historical features can still be clearly seen, such as old retaining walls, hedge walls, and street-side railings. The Man Mo Temple at the junction of Staircase Street and Hollywood Road, and the YMCA building on Belcher’s Street, are both listed as declared monuments of Hong Kong by the government.
