Wing Lee Street

Wing Lee Street is a street in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, located south of Belcher's Street in the southern part of Sheung Wan, between Staircase Street and Hollywood Road. It runs east-west and features nine tong lau (tenement buildings) constructed in the early 1950s. The area is famous for preserving the characteristics of 1960s Hong Kong, and the Berlin Film Festival award-winning Hong Kong movie "A Simple Life" ("岁月神偷") was filmed here.

After "A Simple Life" won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival, Wing Lee Street, which had originally been included in Hong Kong’s urban redevelopment plans, was successfully preserved in its original form. The street is 200 metres long and is a back lane situated above Belcher's Street. Its eastern entrance leads to Hollywood Road, while the western end is a dead-end that connects to a rest area. Pedestrians can use this area to travel to and from Staircase Street. Due to its narrow width and dead-end nature, the street used to be accessible only to residents, who would sit on a few second-hand wooden chairs to chat, or where children played hide-and-seek.

Visiting Wing Lee Street allows you to see things rarely found in Hong Kong anymore, such as green balconies, doorbells, and laundry poles—offering a glimpse into the grassroots life of 1960s Hong Kong. Now, driven by the popularity of "A Simple Life", many locals come here to reminisce about the past. Among them are numerous photography enthusiasts and street photographers, and many local and international celebrities have also made special trips to visit the street.
