Bonham Strand

Bonham Strand is the name of two streets in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong — Bonham Strand East and Bonham Strand West. The two are not fully connected. Bonham Strand East’s eastern end connects to Queen's Road Central near Jervois Street and Wellington Street, and its western end joins Possession Point and the boundary between Queen's Road Central and Queen's Road West. Bonham Strand West begins from a section of Bonham Strand East near Possession Point and extends westward to Des Voeux Road West. This road is named after John Bowring, the third Governor of Hong Kong.

The two sections of Bonham Strand were once a hub for the northern and southern trade businesses, with Bonham Strand West even earning the nickname “Northern and Southern Goods Street.” In addition, Bonham Strand West houses numerous shops selling dried seafood, herbs, and bird’s nests, together with Wing Lok Street forming a shopping district known as the Dried Seafood and Bird’s Nest Street. This area along Bonham Strand was part of Sheung Wan’s coastline during the early days of British colonial rule. Following the Praya Reclamation Scheme initiated in 1852 and subsequent land reclamation projects over the next hundred years, Bonham Strand is now considerably inland from the present-day coastline.

Along Bonham Strand, there are several notable landmarks, including COSCO Tower, Sheung Wan Municipal Services Building and Sheung Wan Civic Centre, as well as the ibis Hong Kong Sheung Wan hotel. Additionally, the dried seafood shop Tang Kee Abalone & Seafood, featured in the Hong Kong TVB drama series “Heart of Greed,” is located here. Since the show aired, it has attracted a large number of tourists to visit the spot.
