Chater Garden

Chater Garden is located on Chater Road in Central, Hong Kong Island. It was officially opened on October 20, 1978, and is one of Hong Kong’s important parks, named after Sir Paul Chater. Sir Paul Chater was a cricket enthusiast, horse racing fan, financier, philanthropist, and collector of porcelain and artworks.

The site of Chater Garden was formerly the Hong Kong Cricket Club, also known as the “cricket ground.” Established in 1851, it housed the club’s pavilion and cricket pitch. After the opening of the Central Station in the 1980s, the area was redeveloped into a park — now known as Chater Garden — which was opened in phases. A plaque in the garden commemorates this history. There is also a foundation stone near the former cricket club pavilion stands, erected on April 2, 1890, by the then visiting Duke of Connaught to mark the commencement ceremony of the land reclamation project in Central.

Chater Garden features facilities such as pavilions, garden paths, and a pond, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists to relax and enjoy leisure time. Due to its proximity to the Legislative Council Building and its larger open space compared to Statue Square, Chater Garden has become a popular venue for public gatherings and political assemblies in Hong Kong. On days without such events, the garden also serves as one of the gathering spots for Filipino domestic helpers.
