Statue Square

Statue Square is a public square in Hong Kong, located on Hong Kong Island in Central. It was a landmark plaza in the early days of Victoria City. Following the fall of Hong Kong and post-war urban development, Statue Square no longer houses any statues of members of the British royal family, with only a monument commemorating the banker Sir Catchick Paul Chater remaining. In the 1960s, the government redesigned the square into its current form for public leisure use.

Unlike typical recreational parks, Statue Square does not have facilities such as soccer fields, swimming pools, or amusement parks. However, it features the Cenotaph war memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives during World War II, along with a fountain, pavilions, and landscaped gardens. The area also boasts many famous buildings and attractions nearby, including the Legislative Council Building, the HSBC Main Building, the former Supreme Court Building, the Star Ferry pier, and Queen's Pier. On Remembrance Day each year, government officials and military bands gather at Statue Square to hold commemorative ceremonies, laying wreaths and observing moments of silence at the Cenotaph.

Nowadays, most Filipino domestic helpers gather at Statue Square on holidays, packing the square to capacity, with nearby streets often designated as pedestrian-only zones. As a result, the square has earned the nickname “Little Philippines.” Since 2003, Statue Square has hosted the Hong Kong WinterFest every December, featuring decorations inspired by Santa’s Village in Finland, as well as the tallest outdoor Christmas tree in Hong Kong, making it a beloved annual event.
