Guide Back in the day, Barkol was home to numerous temples representing a wide variety of religions, almost encompassing all religious forms found across China, earning it the reputation of having the most temples in the entire Xinjiang region. Due to its unique historical background, “Dizang Temple and Immortal Maiden Temple” is the only surviving ancient religious site in Barkol and also one of the largest temples preserved in Xinjiang. Introduction: Located at the foot of the majestic and serene Mount Zhang (Yuegongtai), “Dizang Temple and Immortal Maiden Temple” was built in the 2nd year (1797 AD) and 5th year (1800 AD) of the Jiaqing reign. It is a combination of Buddhist and Taoist architectural styles — a rare cultural fusion. The area features towering temple structures surrounded by lush vegetation.

The temple complex currently houses 11 ancient buildings, including two folk culture exhibition halls, two cultural relics exhibition halls, and one under-construction exhibition hall. With deep cultural roots, it bears witness to the social transformations of Barkol and echoes the camel bells along the Silk Road, reflecting the integration of Central Plains and grassland cultures.
