Due to the differences in seasonal pastures, transhumance is a crucial aspect of Kazakh life and livelihood, and also a primary task for Kazakh herders. As such, a type of housing that is convenient to move and easy to set up and take down is necessary—this housing is the Kazakh yurt.

The ancestors of the Kazakhs created the movable yurt thousands of years ago. Everything from the selection of materials to the cover felt, binding straps, ropes, and more is meticulously crafted, requiring specialized artisans. The Kazakh yurt consists of two main parts: the felt covering that shields against wind and rain, and the wooden frame that supports the felt. The yurt is made up of a roof, roof poles, walls, door, door curtain, felt covering, and surrounding curtains.

The yurt shown in the picture is set up on the grassland by the Kazakhs. The largest one among them is currently the world’s largest fully handcrafted yurt, soon to be listed in the Guinness World Records. This yurt has walls 2.4 meters high, roof poles 6 meters long, a diameter of 22 meters, and covers a floor area of 118 square meters. The circular roof has a diameter of 4 meters, and the entire frame is handmade wood, with outer materials made of handmade felt. It uses a total of 205 felt panels...
