Huoshaogou is situated at the junction of northern and southern Xinjiang, approximately 40 kilometers from Ürümqi. Stretching over a hundred miles, the landscape is poetically etched into the Kalazazhu Mountain Range, making it the longest Jurassic mountain range in China. Its geological formations offer high value for the study of the Tianshan Mountains' uplift, neotectonic activities, and the Tertiary stratigraphy and paleoenvironment. Huoshaogou is an ocean of color, where ochre red blends with splashes of yellow, white, black, and green, creating dazzling waves; it is also nature’s master sculptor, crafting rugged and bold shapes. Whether viewed from afar or up close, the serene scenery offers endless delights.

In the morning light, before the thin mist has fully lifted, the landscape sheds its moving hues, and in a fleeting glance, the desire to compete in the busy world fades away like a breeze.

At sunset, walking along while singing, the mottled colors conceal the wisdom of Zen-like verses, bringing quiet joy.

Spring has its tenderness, summer its allure. Autumn scatters a carpet of gold, preserving a single petal of lingering fragrance amid the desolation. Winter freezes it into the sanctity of frost flowers, with stubborn ridges rising towards the sky and flowing white beards reaching upward.

Huoshaogou is devoted to color — its colors are vivid and striking. Each hillside displays distinct tones based on the varying mineral content, and the hues shift with the seasons. In early spring and summer, the colors are bright and eye-catching; in autumn and winter, they turn somewhat muted and desolate, yet still reveal subtle elegance through the cracks in ice and snow. Therefore, most visitors choose to shoot up close to capture the rich colors and clear textures. After multiple visits, one grows fond of its forms: resembling a reclining camel with its neck stretched in a long cry; like solemn castles standing densely; flying apsaras as barriers too awe-inspiring to peer into; fierce tigers and venerable turtles in endearing poses; or rocks suspended mid-air, teetering on the edge. Delighted by these sights, one walks instead of riding, capturing them all with a long lens.
