Ancient City of Changji

The Ancient City of Changji is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Ancient City of Changji is located within Changji City and is commonly known as the Tang Dynasty City. In the early 1980s, archaeologists from the Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences conducted on-site investigations. The city is rectangular in shape, approximately 1,000 meters long from north to south and 600 meters wide from east to west. Its walls were built using rammed earth, with layers about 6 centimeters thick. In 1964, remnants of the eastern wall still stood 500 meters long, and the northern wall 600 meters long. The highest remaining section of the wall reached about 6 meters, with the top of the wall being up to 3 meters wide. The northern wall was largely intact, featuring 15 bastions — eight to the west of the barbican and seven to the east. Each bastion was about 19 meters wide and spaced roughly 30 meters apart. Inside the ancient city, there is a large earthen platform running north to south, standing about 5 meters high. This platform was constructed using adobe bricks that measured 20 centimeters in length, 20 centimeters in width, and 12 centimeters in thickness. However, another four platforms were built with rammed earth, featuring layers about 8 centimeters thick — consistent with the construction method of the city walls — indicating that these platforms were built during the same period as the city walls. Due to infrastructure construction, two significant historical sites and relics were discovered within the ancient city.
