Site of Liuzhou City

The site of Liuzhou City is located southeast of Baziwā Natural Village in Haicheng Town, approximately 2.5 kilometers from Haicheng Town. It was initially built during the Song Dynasty. After the Western Xia took control of the Haoyuan area, it was called “Dongmouhui,” and a “Tian Du Jiangjun Si” (Heavenly Capital Military Command) with a strong garrison was stationed within the city. The city occupied the original site of present-day Haicheng. In the 14th year of the Qianlong reign (1749), due to factors such as the need for easier access to water, the city was relocated five li away and rebuilt as a fortress and then a city (now the site of present-day Haiyuan County), and the Liuzhou City was abandoned.

The site of Liuzhou City is rectangular in shape, measuring 1,300 meters in length and 550 meters in width, with remnants standing 4–7 meters high. The base is 7 meters thick, and the surviving top is 1–3 meters wide. It has gates on the south and north sides, surrounded by city walls, with the remnants of an outer moat 8 meters wide.

The structure collapsed during the 1920 Haiyuan earthquake.

The site of Liuzhou City is now a key cultural relic protection unit at the autonomous region level in Ningxia.

Haicheng Town: Located in the central part of Haiyuan County, Ningxia, Haicheng Town neighbors the Nanhuashan Water Conservation Forest, the county’s only ecological forest reserve. Covering a total area of about 126.5 square kilometers, the town sits at elevations ranging from 1,100 to 2,955 meters and features a typical temperate continental monsoon climate. The town administers 10 administrative villages and 4 community residential committees, with a total population of 55,607, including 36,000 Hui people.
