Shapotou

Shapotou is a national scenic area, a AAAAA-level tourist attraction, a national water conservancy scenic area, and a national nature reserve.

The ancient Yellow River races like a wild horse through the mountains and valleys, making a sharp turn at the Heishan Gorge before flowing into Zhongwei in Ningxia. This sudden bend transforms the usually turbulent river into a gentle and graceful maiden, flowing calmly to nourish the fertile lands on both banks; this turn also gives rise to a magical natural wonder — Shapotou.

Shapotou is located on the southern edge of the Tengger Desert, 20 kilometers west of Zhongwei County, on the north bank of the Yellow River. During the Qianlong era, it earned the name "Shatuo Tou" (literally "Sand Pile Head") due to the formation of a massive sand dune 2,000 meters wide and about 100 meters high along the riverbank. Over time, the name evolved phonetically into “Shapotou.” The hundred-meter-high sand slope, inclined at 60 degrees, produces a resonant “嗡—嗡—” hum when people slide down on sunny, warm days. This sound resembles a golden bell ringing out loud and melodious, earning the site the reputation of “Shaposhan Bell Chime,” one of China’s Four Famous Singing Sands. Looking up from the base of the sand slope, the towering dunes hang like a cascading waterfall. Riding the sandy flow feels like descending from the heavens, free from the dust of the world and filled with the joy of the bell’s chime. As the poem describes: “The hundred-meter sand slope stands sheer, under which the legendary bell rings clear; tourists slide down with playful glee, dancing gracefully 'mid the shimmering sea.”

The majestic Yellow River, the vast desert, and the towering sand dunes create a picturesque scene. Added to this are the decades-long efforts by desert control experts and local communities to ensure the safe passage of railways, tame the drifting sands, and create oases — achievements that have benefited the people of Zhongwei and made Shapotou famous worldwide.

Through the long passage of time, from ancient to modern days, the gift of nature and the relentless creativity of people have transformed Shapotou from its historical name “Shatuo Tou.” It now harmoniously blends natural scenery, cultural heritage, and the fruits of desert control, and is hailed by the world as the “Capital of Deserts” and a “Globally Unique Tourist Resource.” Here, the poetic imagery of “lonely smoke in the vast desert straight, the setting sun over the long river round” is brought to life in its most perfect form. Sliding down the dunes while listening to the bell-like hum, playing at the springs at the base of the slope, you become one with the moment, immersed in endless joy. Rafting on the Yellow River, chasing the waves, is thrilling and exciting. Riding a camel across the sands offers the vast feeling of gliding over the desert sea and a breathtaking view of the sunrise and sunset. Stargazing and moon-watching, you listen to the mysterious sounds of the desert night. Gathering around a bonfire, drinking, feasting, and singing and dancing wildly makes the desert adventure all the more intriguing. The ancient waterwheels by the river turn leisurely, channeling water for irrigation with unique charm. The orchards beneath the sands, lush with greenery and vibrant with flowers, offer sweet fruits and the songs of birds, enchanting visitors. The “twin cableways bridging north and south” fulfill the dream of soaring over the river. The traditional wooden sailboats on the Yellow River and bare-backed boat trackers bring the song “Sister, you sit at the bow, brother, I’ll walk the shore” to vivid life. Aerial flights and skydiving transcend the cinematic montage and land softly on the sand dunes. A variety of sand-themed sports and fitness activities such as sand sculpting, sand therapy, sand bathing, desert ball games, and desert track and field combine intelligence, fun, knowledge, and exercise. Ethnic performances, the Yellow River Pear Blossom Festival, and the Desert and Yellow River International Tourism Festival offer novel formats and unique content. The upcoming Desert Dragon Dance Competition on May 4th will feature over a hundred giant dragons soaring and tumbling across the boundless Tengger Desert, presenting a grand, awe-inspiring spectacle accompanied by thunderous drums... This is the brand-new Shapotou tourist area of today. Rated as a AAAA-level tourist attraction in 2000, it is the pride of Ningxia and a world-renowned travel destination.
