Sikuizi

Sikuizi is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Sikuizi is located 20 kilometers south of Xuanhe Town in Zhongwei, covering an area of 10 square kilometers. Historically known as Beihai, Sikuizi is flanked by the lush, layered peaks of Xiangshan Mountain to the south, where treacherous mountain paths once served as a strategic chokepoint controlling access to Guyuan, Pingliang, and Xi’an. To the north lies the Wei-Ning Plain, with a major river flowing through vast fields of flat farmland, presenting the boundless scenery of a “riverine Jiangnan” on the frontier; to the east lies the ancient capital of the Western Xia Dynasty, Yinchuan; to the west lies the tourist destination of Shapotou. Historically, due to its location as the gateway to southern Ningxia and the barrier of the Wei-Ning region, Sikuizi was a contested military stronghold; today, its unique geographical terrain and long-standing legends have made it a popular tourist destination. The precipitous, serene, strange, and breathtaking natural scenery makes Sikuizi stand out uniquely in the world. Speaking of peril, those who cross the Huanglong Bridge will know what true danger feels like. Below is a gorge dozens of meters deep, while the suspension bridge is just over a meter wide and 30 meters long, paved with wooden planks. The ends of the bridge slope steeply and dangerously, connected by ladders and iron railings. Walking on the swaying suspension bridge with its creaking cables creates a staggering sensation — that’s what we call perilous.

Speaking of serenity, after crossing the suspension bridge and climbing over the hill, take a stroll through the ancient transportation hub of Sikuizi Gully. Pause in the ravines, lean on the railings above historic temples and monasteries, and you’ll be filled with a sense of returning to nature and stepping back in time, away from the city — a feeling that brings many reflections. There are also the roaring waves of the river and the murmuring springs...

Sikuizi boasts precipitously beautiful and majestic natural wonders such as the “Sikuizi Grand Canyon” and “Lingxian Valley,” as well as the craggy “Stone Coffer.” Though not as expansive as Yunnan’s Stone Forest, the Stone Coffer features undulating strange rocks — some jutting sharply upwards, others smooth as mirrors — each with a unique form and a naturally delightful charm. Exiting the Stone Coffer, the mountains before you resemble the reclining figure of the great leader Mao Zedong lying peacefully between heaven and earth, an astonishing sight. About one kilometer east of “Mao Zedong Mountain,” you’ll encounter towering cliffs of Danxia landform, riddled with holes and standing firmly like a knife’s edge, where the uniquely spectacular “finishing touch” landscape comes into view.

The Danxia cliffs in the western section of Sikuizi feature a grand and majestic presence. Clap your hands lightly, and you’ll hear thunderous echoes; shout loudly, and the returning sound roars like thunder. It’s a natural rock-climbing site and a perfect arena for the brave. Exiting the western scenic area, the naturally formed “Immortal’s Right Footprint” awaits at the entrance of the eastern scenic area.

Sikuizi has a long and glorious cultural heritage: the story of Su Wu, a famous official of the Western Han Dynasty, who herded sheep while holding his imperial staff for nineteen years, is deeply moving and tear-jerking. Relics such as the “Su Wu Broken Bridge” and “Su Wu’s Cliff Cave” are found here in great numbers. The tales of the Song Dynasty’s Yang Family Generals are widely known here. Some lesser-known historical legends and stories have been passed down through the ages in Sikuizi — such as Yang Yanjing’s great battle against the Western Xia, the military siege of Liuzhou, and the “Miraculous Gold from the Rice Bowl” that saved the army from hardship...
