Guanshan Academy
Guanshan Academy (Second Batch of Provincial-Level Protected Sites)
Era: Qing Dynasty, Republic of China
Address: Southwest of Hougu Village, Guanshan Town, Pingding County
Guanshan earned its name from its main peak, which resembles a traditional hat (“guan”) and rises prominently above the neighboring peaks. The mountain is home to a series of historic temples, including Zifu Temple, Chonggu Academy, Wenchang Pavilion (with Lvzu Cave beneath it), and Confucius Cave, collectively referred to as “Guanshan Academy.” The exact founding date of the structures is unknown, but according to inscribed steles, the Left Chancellor Lü Sicheng of the Yuan Dynasty renovated and expanded the site during the Zhishun era (1330–1332). The buildings were repaired multiple times during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Among the extant structures, only Confucius Cave dates back to the Ming Dynasty, while the rest were rebuilt in the late Qing Dynasty.
Zifu Temple is a single-courtyard quadrangle covering an area of 1,470 square meters. The temple faces south and features a central axis with a mountain gate and the main hall. On either side stand a bell tower and a drum tower facing each other. Flanking the main hall are three side rooms on each east and west side. The architectural style is characteristic of the Qing Dynasty. Eight Qing-era steles and one Yuan-era stele are preserved in the temple.
Chonggu Academy is situated midway up the mountainside of Guanshan. Its founding date is unknown, but it was renovated during the Yuan Dynasty and reconstructed in the Ming and Qing periods. The academy faces east and follows a two-courtyard quadrangle layout, divided into upper and lower sections according to the terrain, covering a total area of 737 square meters. The buildings in the courtyard are cave dwellings (yaodong), with both the main and wing rooms well-preserved.
Wenchang Pavilion and Lvzu Cave are arranged in two levels along the slope, facing east. The upper level houses Wenchang Pavilion, and the lower level contains Lvzu Cave. Both are single-room brick-arch cave structures. Confucius Cave is located further up the mountainside and consists of a group of sandstone grottoes. Carved in the fifth year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1526), the cave’s exterior facade utilizes naturally formed rock, slightly modified to create the appearance of a single-courtyard quadrangle that faces north.
Guanshan Academy has been admired by literati throughout history. Lü Sicheng, Left Chancellor of the Zhongshu Sheng (Imperial Secretariat) in the Yuan Dynasty, and Qiao Yu, Minister of War in Nanjing during the Ming Dynasty, both studied here. Fu Shan, a patriotic scholar from the late Ming and early Qing period, also once lived in seclusion at the academy, leaving behind timeless poetry. Of these, the poetic stele of Qiao Yu and the carved stone inscriptions from the Xuanmi Pagoda Collection in five-character verse are especially renowned.
In May 2013, Guanshan Academy in Pingding was designated as part of the Seventh Batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
